For the Voith Hydro department, Automation – Plant Systems Engineering, we are looking for

Engineer I (Electrical Designer – Automation) 
Brossard, QC
 

 

The primary focus for this position is to develop controls system for hydro power plants. This engineer will complete assigned system analysis, process and instrumentation design, cabinet design, test and commissioning tasks for new and existing hydro power station control systems.

 

Main responsibilities

 

  • Develop power station’s P&ID. Specify instrumentation for turbine, generator and balance of plant for plant control, working closely to power unit and plant engineers.
     
  • Develop wiring diagrams, cable & conduits schedule, including detail routing and terminal connections.
     
  • Work closely with the Automation Lead Engineer, Plant engineering and customer engineers to determine requirements, I/O listings, etc. from a hardware standpoint.
     
  • Design terminal boxes and control system cabinets.
     
  • Stay current regarding latest control system product offerings (Schneider Electric, Allen Bradley and Siemens) and work under the Lead Engineers to develop a cost effective hardware design that meets the customer’s requirement.
     
  • Generate detailed electronic, cabinet layout, interconnection drawings and BoM’s, initially for solicitation of bids and subsequently for detailed cabinet construction.
     
  •  Resolve layout and wiring issues with the cabinet vendor that arise during cabinet construction.
     
  • Coordinate (including execution) of Factory Acceptance Testing. Provide support to quality inspections.
     
  • Provide factory and on-site engineering services to the customer to resolve issues that arise during field installation.
     
  • Provide on-site engineering services to assist commissioning engineers during initial instrumentation power-up, calibration and monitoring. Provide on-site commissioning support during generating unit outages to assist electricians in testing I/O wiring and functionality.
     
  • Represents the Voith team at customer kickoff meeting, plant walk-down and design reviews and ensures that appropriate design issues are aired and resolved.
     
  • Making system calculations and working with suppliers to calculate cost estimates in the project proposal phase under the direction of the Offer Project Manager. It is requested to be able to prepare and support all necessary documentations related to automation system.

 

Related work experience with Hydro Automation Control Systems is a plus. In addition, the candidate must possess the following skills and experience:

 

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in instrumentation and control and automation design environment (Site installation in power plant is a plus).

  • Knowledge on the electrical standard for electrical design and industrial installation.
  • Proficient in Drawing Circuit Diagrams in a modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) / Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) environment. Autocad, Autocad Electrical and Solid Edge.
  • Basic knowledge of the design and function of PLC based digital control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of control system network design.
  • Knowledge of the control processes found in a hydro-electric Power Plant.
  • Bilingual French/English.
  • Proficient to an advanced level in MS-Word & MS-Excel.
  • This position requires travel away from home base from 15-35% of the time during an average year and for periods of up to six weeks for a single assignment.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and take high level supervision and work unsupervised for long periods.
  • Ability to work as part of a team of professional engineering team.
  • Above average technical writing skills.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task.
